CEO Messages

Message from our CEO sent 7/3/2020

Dear Member,

As we head into the 4th of July weekend, it is hard to believe that we are halfway through the year. And what a year it has been.

You may have seen in the news that some counties around the state have begun to turn the dial back on reopening California. I wanted to take this opportunity to remind you that Cabrillo CU is considered an essential business and that all of our branches continue to remain open and ready to serve you.

We will continue to operate with slightly reduced branch hours. And as a precaution (and to maintain social distancing), we will continue to limit the numbers of members allowed in our branches at any given time.

In my last CEO message, I reported that between the months of March and June, we gave members the option to skip their loan payments without any fees. Although that program ended on June 30th, Cabrillo members skipped a total of over 6,300 loan payments. Between this and the other fees that we were waiving, members saved over $150,000.

But what I didn't tell you, was that all of those loan payments totaled over $1,100,000. That is a lot of money that members were able to keep in their pockets, at a time when they likely needed it the most.

As your credit union, we will continue to find ways to support you. Not just because of the Pandemic, but because it is the right thing to do. It's the Cabrillo way!

With that said, as part of our continued member support efforts, we will temporarily be extending STAR 5 benefits to all members. For a list of benefits, visit www.cabrillocu.com/rewards. (Terms and conditions apply. You will be notified 30-days prior to any termination or changes.)

As you and your family prepare to celebrate Independence Day this year, I ask you to please consider doing these 4 things:

1) Take a moment to think about the men and women who gave their lives, so that we have the privilege of celebrating our independence.

2) Be safe...

3) Be responsible...

4) Have fun!

With Regards,
Michael DeShazo
President & CEO

Dear Member,

On Friday, March 13th, the Cabrillo team enacted our Business Continuity Plan, in order to provide uninterrupted service to you during these unprecedented times.

As part of that plan, we immediately moved approximately 25% of our workforce offsite, and launched a number of programs and initiatives, to help ease the financial burden that the pandemic may have had on you.

It is hard to imagine that it has been 10 weeks, but I am happy to report that based on feedback from members, we have been able to make a significant, positive impact.

Here are a few "facts and figures" to help demonstrate the level of assistance that we were able to provide to our members:

Skipping Loan Payments and Waiving Fees

Beginning in March, we provided members with the opportunity to skip* their qualified Cabrillo loan payments, for up to three months. This included auto loans, personal loans and Cabrillo credit cards. Members also had the option to skip their real estate loan payments.

As of last week, members have skipped over 6,100 loan payments, without any fees. We are also temporarily waiving some other fees, including: cashier's checks, temporary checks, our $1.00 on non-CO-OP ATM fee, wire transfer fees and more.

This has collectively saved members over $150,000 since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Pandemic Assistance Loan

In an effort to help support members who were financially affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, we launched a Pandemic Assistance Loan. I am happy to report that we have been able to assist hundreds of members with this loan.

Branch and Member Support Teams

All Cabrillo branches have remained open to assist our members during the pandemic. We did slightly alter branch hours, but staff has done an amazing job of making sure that our members receive the same incredible member service that they have come to expect from the Cabrillo team.

And despite heavy call volumes, our service levels for Member Support have averaged 89% for the past three months, which further demonstrates that our members are being well served.

Moving Forward

As we look forward to things transitioning to a "new normal", I want to express my utmost gratitude for the Cabrillo team. I am exceptionally proud of what they have been able to achieve these past 10 weeks.

I am confident that we will continue to provide you exceptional service as we move into the next phase of the pandemic. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this difficult time.

With Regards,

Michael A. DeShazo
President & CEO

*All accounts must be in good standing and loan payments must be current at the time of a skip request. The loan due date will advance one month and advance again, by one month, the following month. Finance charges will continue to accrue during the deferment period. Deferring a payment may extend the original term and increase the finance charges. The regular monthly payment amount will be recalculated with each statement cycle. Accrued interest will be collected with each subsequent payment until all interest accrued during the deferment, and subsequent interest, is collected.

Dear Member,

I'm going to take a week off from talking about COVID-19 and instead talk about the unique structure of credit unions, and why it ensures that you can have a voice in how your credit union operates.

But first, here's a quick lesson about credit unions...

Credit unions were originally started by groups of people who got together to form a "financial cooperative", because they didn't have reasonable and affordable access to banking services.

In the case of Cabrillo, we were started in 1955 by 5 United States Border Patrol Agents. Originally named Border Federal Credit Union, our name was changed to Cabrillo Credit Union in 1976.

In 2003, we merged in Sharp HealthCare's credit union. A year later we merged in the City of Carlsbad Employees credit union.

Here's how credit unions work...

Members pool their funds as deposits, while other members borrow these funds as loans. The beauty of this system is that as not-for-profit entities, there are no stockholders focused on making a profit from your financial relationship.

Rather, as a member of a credit union, you are a shareholder. You own a portion of the credit union through the $5 share that you hold in your savings account. Whether you have $5 or $500,000 in your account, you have an equal stake in the credit union.

And you receive the benefits of your membership through the free and low cost services you enjoy from Cabrillo.

But as a member you also have several responsibilities.

Responsibility 1: To participate in the cooperative.

This means that you should use the services of the credit union whenever possible, so that we can reinvest any fees or interest that you pay back into providing you with additional free or low-cost products and services. It is a win-win for everyone.

Responsibility 2: To vote for your Board of Directors and Supervisory Committee.

When you vote for elected officials of the credit union, you are voting for the people who will represent you. This is how you ensure that your voice is heard.

We currently have an election running for an open seat on Cabrillo's Supervisory Committee. The Supervisory Committee provides oversight to the credit union.

Cabrillo Credit Union is strong and financially stable. It is the Supervisory Committee's responsibility to make sure we remain this way.

Please take a minute to click on the link below and learn more about the election process. And of course, please take a moment to vote for the person who you believe aligns best with you and your interests.

Remember...your vote counts.

Dear Member,

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some of our members have been impacted with lost jobs or reduced hours. We have put a number of programs in place to assist you, if you have been impacted.

Other members are working more hours than they were before.

Right now our most impacted group of members are Sharp frontline responders.

These brave men and women are courageously fighting on the front lines battling COVID-19. They are risking their own health and safety, in order to help countless San Diegans who have become ill.

When Cabrillo merged with Sharp HealthCare's credit union in 2003, we didn't just bring on their members...we committed to being there for Sharp, during the good times...and the bad.

As part of that commitment, I am proud to announce that Cabrillo has partnered with Sharp Employee Best Health and the Integrative Health initiative to provide wellness bags to Sharp's 6,600 frontline responders.

These Sharp heroes are battling COVID-19 at facilities in San Diego, including Sharp Memorial, Sharp Outpatient Pavilion, Sharp Grossmont, Sharp Chula Vista, Sharp Coronado and other Sharp facilities.

I am happy to report that over 1,600 bags have been distributed and that the program has been very well received.

Phase 2 is now kicking off, which includes creating and distributing wellness bags for the other 5,000 Sharp frontline responders at the facilities listed above.

This is a HUGE undertaking by the Sharp Best Health team...and Cabrillo is proud to be able to underwrite the entire cost of the program.

Since Sharp frontline responders are working so hard to serve San Diego, we wanted them to know that Cabrillo is here to serve them!

I hope you are as proud as I am to be part of the Cabrillo family. If you are, please click on this link and tell us how Cabrillo has positively impacted you and your family.

With Regards,
Michael DeShazo
President & CEO

Dear Member,

I hope this message finds you well.

Each week I have been sending updates regarding the COVID-19 Pandemic, and how Cabrillo is here to support you through these unprecedented times.

To get the latest updates on the great programs that we are offering for members, as well as important information on branch hours and shared branch availability, please visit our Coronavirus (COVID-19) Updates page at: www.cabrillocu.com/COVID-19. This page is updated regularly.

In the meantime, today I wanted to talk about something that might not be top of mind for you right now, but that is VERY important to your "financial" health.

Since this pandemic started, there has been a significant increase in scam and fraud activity, to the tune of 600% and rising. Criminals are trying to exploit peoples' fear for financial gain.

Instead of trying to list all of the scams and fraud scenarios here, my team has included the information on our COVID-19 updates page, so it is available for all of our members.

Please make sure you review this information ASAP!

While we haven't had any members report being victims of these scams yet, other credit unions have, so it is only a matter of time.

To find out more, please visit: www.cabrillocu.com/COVID-19#Fraud-Alert

My team and I continue to remain here for you and your family during this exceptionally difficult time. If there is anything that we can do to assist you, please don't hesitate to ask.

You can contact our Member Support team between the hours of 7:30 AM and 5:00 PM Monday through Thursday and 7:30 AM and 6:00 PM Friday.

With Regards,
Michael DeShazo

Dear Members,

As the coronavirus continues to be front and center in everyone’s mind, we wanted to take this opportunity to reassure you that Cabrillo has emergency plans in place, in the event of a pandemic, or natural disaster.

We stand ready to support our members during difficult times.

Here’s how:

1. Cabrillo has a comprehensive emergency plan. It is reviewed and updated regularly. The plan addresses both disasters AND pandemics.

Since a plan is only as good as the people who implement it, we have established a Crisis Management Team, that regularly holds “mock drills” to ensure that everyone is prepared when a real emergency strikes.

2.  We have made a significant investment in our infrastructure, to provide redundancy. We built a network of safe sites, with locations around the country. In the event of an emergency or natural disaster in San Diego, our systems will automatically “cut over” to one of our other backup locations. This way we can continue to support you, even if a disaster strikes San Diego AND other areas around the country.

3.  Employees in key positions have been equipped with the ability to work remotely, so they can continue to work, even if they can’t get to one of our office locations. And our electronic systems give you the ability to transfer money and pay bills, without having to leave your home.

The Cabrillo Credit Union Leadership team and Board of Directors have invested a lot of time, energy and resources to ensure that your money and personal information are safe and secure. Our strong investment to provide you support during a disaster or pandemic is part of our commitment to providing you with the best service possible.

In regards to Coronavirus COVID-19, if you visit our branches, please know that our branch teams are available to serve you, as always.

We've altered our daily cleaning procedures to more frequently disinfect high-touch surfaces and have made hand sanitizer readily available. We are also educating our branch teams on best practices recommended by the CDC.

Our hearts go out to the Coronavirus victims and their families. We sincerely hope that the situation is resolved quickly and that more lives aren’t lost.

Message from the President:

On behalf of myself and the Cabrillo team, we would like to say thank you for another successful year. Cabrillo has the best members and we appreciate all of the support you have given us.

As 2019 comes to an end, let’s reflect on the good times and disregard any challenges. It’s time to prepare for an exciting New Year, as we enter into a new decade.

The holidays are a great time to relax and enjoy time with your family. Make that phone call to the special person in your life. Reach out to a distant family member or friend. We shouldn’t have to wait for the holidays, but sometimes that’s the jump start we need.

For me, Christmas Eve, was crazy and wild with one side of my family and I loved every minute of it. On Christmas morning, brunch was at my house for the other side of my family, as we celebrated with Santa Claus. Santa (Me, Uncle Mike) only needed one pillow to stuff in my suit this year. Gone are the years when I needed two pillows (ouch).

For all of our members who watch over us 24/7, I’m sending a special thanks to you. Be safe and enjoy spending time with family, friends and loved ones.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

Enjoy the holidays.

Mike
